Speak out with your Geek out

This week, an internet craze is occuring where thousands of people like myself have been blogging, Facebooking, and tweeting about how geeky they are and why they do it. Check out the craze here: http://www.speakoutwithyourgeekout.com/

For myself, I spent a lot of my youth trying to surpress my love for those things considered “nerdy” or “geeky” because it made me into a target for bullies, who were already relentlessly picking on me. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I really embraced what I liked, and further more when I graduated. Even in high school, I was afraid to go and hang out with the gamer kids or to play Dungeons and Dragons with the people I knew.

Now that I’m here in Edmonton, I’ve joined a few of the communities and I’ve never been happier. I make costumes in my spare time, watch Anime until 2 in the morning, and have lightsaber duels with my mentor. I love the fact that I get to be a kid again and that I get the opportunity to embrace something I didn’t feel I could do when I was younger.

For those of you who think it’s “uncool” to say that you have a profound love for something that people would consider geeky, I feel sorry for you. You’re missing out on something totally awesome.

30 Day Photo Challenge - A picture of someone who has gotten you through the most.
Okay, so it’s two people, but they’re equal in my book. I’ve always been able to rely on my little sister to put things into perspective for me when I’ve had issues. We don’t necessarily share a lot of our lives with each other, but when we do, it’s like we can just understand without having to say much. We’ll have a rant and a drink then feel a little better about the shit we’ve gone through.
My older sister has always been a beacon of strength for me. She’s been through a lot more than what I can even remember and she is still a strong and independent woman. We can rant at each other and maybe not feel much better about anything, but at least we both know we’ll get through things okay.
The three of us are like a tag-team and I couldn’t do anything without them. <3

…A day behind. Oops. Okay, so it’s possessions, but they come hand in hand. My computer and my coffee (mug.)

Fans

I think I’ve decided that I much prefer being around Sci-Fi/Fantasy fans than Anime fans. Yesterday was much more relaxed and laid back than the Anime cons I go to and the crowd is much more mature, age wise. I don’t have to worry about being randomly borderline sexually harassed by 14 year old kids who see a cosplay character they like. Plus, dressing up as a Jedi is so much more cool!

Day 06 - 30 Day Photo Challenge: A picture of someone you would love to trade places with for a day

…There really isn’t anyone I’d trade my life with for a day. No photo today.
