Speak out with your Geek out
This week, an internet craze is occuring where thousands of people like myself have been blogging, Facebooking, and tweeting about how geeky they are and why they do it. Check out the craze here: http://www.speakoutwithyourgeekout.com/
For myself, I spent a lot of my youth trying to surpress my love for those things considered “nerdy” or “geeky” because it made me into a target for bullies, who were already relentlessly picking on me. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I really embraced what I liked, and further more when I graduated. Even in high school, I was afraid to go and hang out with the gamer kids or to play Dungeons and Dragons with the people I knew.
Now that I’m here in Edmonton, I’ve joined a few of the communities and I’ve never been happier. I make costumes in my spare time, watch Anime until 2 in the morning, and have lightsaber duels with my mentor. I love the fact that I get to be a kid again and that I get the opportunity to embrace something I didn’t feel I could do when I was younger.
For those of you who think it’s “uncool” to say that you have a profound love for something that people would consider geeky, I feel sorry for you. You’re missing out on something totally awesome.
